Who We Are

Dr King David Karthak
Founder & Medical Director
Dr. David Karthak brings decades of experience, a global perspective, and a genuine passion for patient care to Dominion Road Surgery. He completed his MBBS and specialist doctorate in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi before making New Zealand his home.

Since arriving in Aotearoa, Dr. Karthak has continued to expand his expertise — earning a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (1999), a Diploma in Emergency Medicine (2002) from the University of Auckland, Diploma in Clinician-performed Ultrasound from the University of Otago (2010) and Fellowship of Urgent Care medicine NZ.

He is a vocationally registered GP and a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. His clinical interests lie in women’s health and infertility, and he is an active member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. In addition to his work in the clinic, Dr. Karthak shares his knowledge as a Senior Lecturer in General Practice at the University of Auckland, helping to shape the next generation of doctors.

Patients value Dr. Karthak’s calm, thoughtful approach and his ability to connect across cultures — he speaks Hindi, Sikkimese, Arabic, and Nepali, with an understanding of Bengali and Punjabi, Korean and Pashto.
Outside of medicine, he’s a dedicated family man with two daughters and a grandson, a keen advocate for work-life balance, and a committed volunteer, giving back to both local and international communities. Whether in the clinic, the classroom, or out for a run, Dr. Karthak brings care, focus, and integrity to everything he does.

His consultations are never rushed, and patients often walk away feeling truly heard, informed, and confident in their care.

Beyond medicine, Dr. Basu enjoys staying active and encourages his patients to prioritise their wellbeing too. Whether he's offering health advice, having a good chat, or exchanging a quick laugh, he brings a human touch to every interaction. A valued member of the Dominion Road Surgery team, he’s as much about connection as he is about clinical care.

Dr. Deepa Rao
General Practioner
Dr. Deepa Rao is a dedicated General Practitioner at Dominion Road Surgery in Mount Eden, Auckland. Dr. Rao earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1998 from Pune, India, and has been practicing in New Zealand since 2010.

Her journey in medicine has taken her across the globe, including time spent working in the UK where she gained valuable experience and specialised in both surgery and paediatric surgery.
Known for her approachable nature and holistic approach to healthcare, Dr. Rao has a special interest in skin health and lifestyle medicine—supporting patients not just in treating illness, but in achieving long-term wellness.

Outside the clinic, Dr. Rao enjoys the mindful balance of Pilates, peaceful walks, and indulging in her love for shoes and bags. Her personal and professional passions reflect her belief in the importance of balance, well-being, and a little joy in everyday life.

Known for her organised, methodical approach, she ensures things run smoothly behind the scenes and on the clinical floor — nothing escapes her attention.

While she runs a tight ship at work, outside the clinic you’ll find her staying active with badminton or tracking down the best bargains in town — a talent she takes almost as seriously as her nursing! She enjoys using her knowledge and experience to guide patients through their healthcare journey and takes pride in delivering care that’s both efficient and effective.

Runming may be firm, but she’s fair — and her focus, discipline, and dry wit make her an invaluable part of the Dominion Road Surgery team.

Yukta
Pharmacy Tech.
Part-time receptionist, full-time slay.
Hey, I’m Yukta — your reception wizard who somehow juggles a million things without breaking a sweat (well, most days… no promises). When I’m not pretending to be a professional phone-answerer-slash-scheduler-extraordinaire, I’m buried in pharmacy textbooks, trying to unlock the secrets of medicine and healthcare without turning my brain into mush.

I thrive on good vibes, mastering the art of staying chill when things get hectic, and making sure every patient feels like the VIP they truly are. When I’m off the clock, you’ll catch me hopping into Pilates classes (trying not to faceplant), power-walking like I’m training for the Olympics, stalking down the best matcha in Auckland, and café hopping — because balance means caffeine, right?

Fun fact: I have a supernatural talent for sniffing out hidden snacks. Basically, I’m a full-time snack ninja on a covert mission to keep the office well-fueled and the cookie jar suspiciously empty.
